Intonations
Cody Critcheloe, DeSe Escobar, Olin Caprison, Seth Bogart | Group Exhibition
Presented by Isaac Alpert & Tony Jackson
Opening July 12th: 6 - 8 pm
DIANA is pleased to present INTONATIONS, a group exhibition exploring the porous and generative relationship between sonic and visual forms of expression. Showcasing the work of four artists who are arguably best known for their contributions to the music industry, this presentation not only reveals their prowess of other media, but also indexes the ways in which music—and its concomitant history, production, dissemination, and performance—influences each artist’s practice, and vice-versa. The artists on view are Seth Bogart, Olin Caprison, Cody Critcheloe, and DeSe Escobar.
Calling into question any delineation between auditory and visual production a priori, INTONATIONS instead revels in the ambiguity between various media. Whether it’s Critcheloe’s dexterity with music production and video direction under his moniker SSION, or Escobar’s acclaim as a DJ and nightlife impresario, both artists incorporate visuals, design and composition into all aspects of their creative output. The same could be said for Bogart and Caprison, who similarly and self-referentially cite their own music-making in their respective sculptures and paintings, while simultaneously allowing their eye towards visual formalism guide their live performances and music videos
All works on view encourage this opacity of medium, in which signs of music production, video storyboarding, and tonal composition are concurrently apparent and subverted, affording each artist the opportunity to move beyond the confines of creative labeling. And in the process, previously under-recognized aspects of each artist’s singularly innovative practice are revealed.
